From ground model to geotechnical design.

Digital 2D and 3D ground modelling

GEONOVA creates digital 2D and 3D ground models based on direct and indirect investigation data. Our service includes the structured preparation of your investigation data, followed by modelling and visualisation of the ground layers, including inclusions, lenses and bands. Save time on ground modelling and focus on your geotechnical assessment; we handle the digital implementation.

Process

From project data to a digital ground model

GEONOVA prepares, models and visualises your geotechnical project data. The work follows five clearly defined steps.

Input

Project data · investigation data · terrain data and elevation references

Data transfer and preparation

You provide the project, investigation and terrain data needed for the work. We check the data for completeness and technical usability, then organise the relevant information for digital modelling.

Modelling and visualisation

Using the data provided, we create the agreed 2D and/or 3D ground model. We visualise the model and make it available to you in a web-based project view.

Section creation

We create the agreed geological 2D sections from the digital ground model. Their alignment follows the project requirements or the instructions agreed with you.

Review and adjustment

You review the model and the sections. One additional revision or adjustment round is included in our standard services. We then incorporate your requested changes into the model and its associated deliverables.

Deliverables through the web portal

After the work is complete, we make the agreed project data available through the GEONOVA web portal.

Between observations, there is more than one solution

An interactive exploration shows how observations become a model – and what remains uncertain between them. Compare methods, follow a survey and explore linked 3D views.

From ground model to calculation

Three ways to use spatial ground information

A 3D ground model improves understanding of subsurface conditions. It can also form the basis of geotechnical calculations. The appropriate approach depends on the engineering task, the structure and the available data.

Derive clusters of calculation models

Areas, or “clusters”, are defined in plan. For each area, a separate conservative calculation model is derived for each geotechnical task. Its layer boundaries and parameter values cover the adverse ground conditions in that area that govern the task. Where ground conditions are very uniform, a single calculation model for the entire construction project may be sufficient for the particular task.

Calculate locally, interpolate the results

The geotechnical task is calculated at locations using the stratigraphy known there from the ground investigations and the associated parameters. The results are then interpolated between calculation locations. This reveals the spatial distribution of a result; the suitability of that interpolation and areas with abrupt changes require separate assessment.

Calculate directly within the 3D model

The spatial models themselves provide the calculation geometry, and each realisation is meshed individually. Different possible realisations of layer boundaries, lenses and spatial parameter distributions reveal their effect on the results. The spread describes the variants investigated and can be used to interpret the expected results.

Task-specific envelopes are derived for conservative models, for example for pile locations that require separate assessment. They must be distinguished from individual possible layer profiles. Their selection depends on the verification concerned.

Principle illustrated: settlement of a silo base slab

This example uses the ground data of the DGGT example. Here, an elastic silo base slab without piles is analysed. One hundred possible ground realisations illustrate how spatially varying layer boundaries, silt lenses and soil stiffness affect settlement and inclination.

Between investigation points, layer boundaries undulate randomly and moderately about their interpolated positions, with one to three periods. The specified levels at the investigation points remain unchanged.

This example is intended solely to illustrate the principle.
